The Other Gender

Women’s first foray into menswear-inspired clothing was helmed none other than by Mademoiselle Coco Chanel, who removed the frills in women’s clothing, replacing it with the simple LBD and women suits. Today’s equivalent is epitomized by clean cuts and Saville Row tailoring, complemented with shoes and accessories that are reminiscent of those used by the opposite gender in the 70s.

While Chanel’s famous tweed jacket continues to be a mainstay on runways, albeit in other variations, 21st century designers have also brought a new meaning to men-inspired womens’ fashion. Here’s a look at some from the Resort 2012 collections.

  1. Ms. Chanel was the first to do it, but now I find others to remix androgyny better! Example? Dolce & Gabbana’s fall 2011 collection was insane! I also liked The Row this resort season — the stripes were awesome!
